Writer & Director
Sofia Andersson
Award-winning narrative and documentary filmmaker. Stockholm.
Cannes / Sundance / Berlin / Toronto

I have been making films for eighteen years — from no-budget shorts in film school to features that premiered at Cannes and Sundance. My work explores identity, displacement, and the quiet violence of everyday life. I am drawn to stories that sit in the silence between what people say and what they mean.
MFA in Film Directing from the Swedish Film Institute. Member of the European Film Academy.

Cinema is the only art form that can make you feel time. Not watch it — feel it. That's what I'm always reaching for.

How I Work
Research
Every project begins with months of immersion. I live with the subject, read everything, talk to everyone. The story has to earn its right to exist before I write a single word.
Writing
I write alone, usually in the early morning. The first draft is always too long, too careful. The real writing happens in the cutting — finding the silence inside the noise.
Directing
On set, I protect the space for actors to discover what the scene needs. I plan meticulously so I can throw the plan away. The best moments are the ones you cannot predict.
Andersson makes films that stay under your skin for weeks. She is the most important Scandinavian director of her generation.
— Sight & Sound
The Weight of Light is a masterwork of restraint — a film that says everything by showing almost nothing.
— The Guardian
Andersson belongs in the company of Bergman and Varda — filmmakers who understand that cinema is a moral act.
— Cahiers du Cinema
