Psychotherapist

Healing begins with being truly heard.

Dr. James Whitfield — Licensed psychotherapist specializing in anxiety, trauma, and life transitions. Private practice in Manhattan.

I don't believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. Every person carries a unique story, and my role is to help you make sense of yours — with patience, honesty, and without judgment.

I've spent over fifteen years helping people move through the moments that feel impossible. My practice is built on one principle: that every person deserves to be met exactly where they are, without agenda or pretense. Before opening my private practice, I trained at Columbia University Medical Center and completed a fellowship in trauma-focused psychotherapy.

Ph.D. Clinical Psychology, Columbia University — Licensed in New York State — EMDR Certified — Member, American Psychological Association

Areas of Focus

Anxiety & Stress

From chronic worry to panic episodes, I help clients understand the root patterns driving their anxiety and develop practical tools for lasting relief.

Trauma & PTSD

Using evidence-based approaches including EMDR and somatic experiencing, I guide clients through processing difficult experiences at their own pace.

Life Transitions

Career changes, divorce, loss, relocation — major life shifts can leave us unmoored. Therapy provides an anchor while you navigate what comes next.

Relationship Patterns

Recurring conflicts, attachment difficulties, and communication breakdowns often trace back to deeper patterns. Together we uncover and reshape them.

How It Works

01

Free Consultation

A brief phone call to discuss what brings you to therapy and whether we might be a good fit for each other.

02

Assessment

In our first sessions we explore your history, goals, and concerns to build a clear picture and develop a personalized treatment plan.

03

Ongoing Sessions

Weekly or biweekly sessions where the real work happens — building insight, developing skills, and moving toward the life you want.

Client Experiences

For the first time in years, I feel like myself again. Dr. Whitfield gave me the tools to understand my anxiety instead of just fighting it.

— Former client, 18 months of treatment

I was skeptical about therapy. James created a space where I could actually be honest. That changed everything.

Common Questions

How long does therapy typically last?

It depends entirely on your needs and goals. Some clients find meaningful progress in a few months of focused work, while others benefit from longer-term therapy that unfolds over a year or more. We revisit your goals regularly so treatment always stays purposeful.

Do you accept insurance?

I am an out-of-network provider. I provide superbills after each session that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Many PPO plans cover a significant portion of out-of-network mental health services.

What's the difference between in-person and video sessions?

Both formats are equally effective for most clients. In-person sessions take place at my Manhattan office, while video sessions offer flexibility for those with busy schedules or who prefer the comfort of their own space. Many clients alternate between the two.
