Why I still carry a film camera

Looking down into the viewfinder of a twin-lens reflex camera

On every assignment there is an old twin-lens reflex in my bag next to the digital cameras. It shoots twelve frames per roll, and that is exactly why it is there.

Twelve frames make me slower. I look longer, wait for the gesture to finish, and often decide not to press the shutter at all. Many of my favourite digital pictures were taken right after I had put the film camera down.

The waist-level finder makes people forget the camera. They look at me, not at the lens.
